Homemade Pickles!

I used lemon, Kirby and traditional cucumbers for my Bread and Butter Pickles

My garden is giving up lots of cucumbers. The solution: pickles!

Was nervous. You see a recipe that says, one gallon of cucumbers. What is one gallon? I called my mother and we got a little tense with each other as she tried to explain. But it made no sense. My friend Trish gave me an old family recipe for classic Bread and Butter Pickles. So much sugar. All of them had so much sugar. Then I turned to THE JOY OF PICKING by Linda Zeidler (Harvard Common Press). I liked her recipe but it needs a bit more sugar than called for because the vinegar makes it a bit too tart. But these are still darn good pickles. I want to do some corn relish, and a few more things before summer is over.

I'll make Trish's family recipe over the weekend.

  1. I love Bread and Butter pickles! Are those tomatillos with the cucumbers?
